Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Free-to-Air TV being removed from the fibre network?

Free-to-Air (FTA) TV is being removed from the Opticomm fibre to the premise (FTTP) network to enable future-proofing of FTTP networks and deployment of next-generation broadband services, which will support multi-gigabit speeds.

The traditional broadcast method of delivering FTA TV on FTTP networks (over the last 20 years) has become more challenging to support as equipment reaches end-of-life and future manufacture and supply is uncertain, driven by alternative methods of delivery including streaming over broadband networks.

Fibre networks are increasingly focused on broadband and smart services, while Free-to-Air TV is now widely accessible via streaming platforms or traditional antennas.

The FTA service over the FTTP network will no longer be supported after 1st October 2025 in affected communities, and customers are encouraged to transition to alternative methods. Opticomm cannot guarantee support of FTA TV signal in affected communities from Oct 1st but, where possible, will continue to broadcast FTA TV signal until Feb 1st 2026 to give customers time to transition to alternative solutions. Opticomm will then be switching off all FTA TV signals in affected communities completely from Feb 1st 2026.

You can continue to access Free-to-Air TV via:

  • Streaming applications from major broadcasters
  • A traditional antenna, which remains a reliable and cost-effective alternative – it can be positioned on your roof (if permitted in your community) or via an indoor set-top antenna available at hardware and electrical retailers.
Which communities on the Opticomm Footprint are impacted by the FTA shutdown?

IMPORTANT: You will receive a direct letter communication via mail if you have been impacted. Please check your mail to see if you have received a letter.

The FTA shutdown affects specific communities across NSW, VIC, WA, SA, and NT. If you believe you are impacted, please check your mail for a direct notification letter or contact Opticomm for confirmation of your location.

Will I lose access to my favorite channels?

No. You can still access channels like ABC, SBS, Seven, Nine, and Ten via:

  • Streaming apps (e.g., ABC iview, 7plus, 9Now, 10Play, SBS On Demand)
  • Antenna-based reception, which remains a viable and reliable alternative
Do I need internet to watch TV now?

Only if you choose streaming. If you use an antenna, you can watch Free-to-Air TV without an internet connection. The antenna can be indoor set top variety or via a externally mounted antenna.

What are my options for watching Free-to-Air TV?

You can choose:

  • Streaming: On-demand, catch-up, and live TV via apps
  • Antenna: Traditional broadcast reception using a rooftop or indoor antenna
What equipment do I need?

For streaming:

  • Smart TV or streaming device (e.g., Chromecast, Apple TV)
  • Internet connection which can be provided on the Opticomm network and source from an internet service provider

For antenna:

  • TV with a digital tuner (most modern TVs have this built-in)
Are streaming services free?

Many Free-to-Air channels offer free streaming apps. Subscription services (e.g., Netflix, Stan) are optional and separate.

Can I still watch live news and sports?

Yes. Both streaming and antenna options support live broadcasts:

  • Streaming apps often include live news and sports events
  • Antennas receive live broadcasts directly from local transmitters
Is streaming more expensive than using an antenna?

Streaming may involve internet costs and optional subscriptions. Antenna-based viewing is typically free after installation.

Will I need technical support to switch?

Streaming: May require help setting up apps or devices

Antenna: If you don't already have one, installation may be needed. A technician can assist with setup and signal tuning.

Which option is better for me?

It depends on your preferences:

  • Choose streaming for flexibility, on-demand content, and smart features
  • Choose antenna for simplicity, no data usage, and reliable live broadcasts
Is streaming suitable for older users or those with accessibility needs?

Yes. Streaming platforms often include features like subtitles, voice control, and screen readers. Many are designed to be user-friendly.

Who can help me get an external antenna?

Most local TV Antenna companies will offer quotes to supply and install antenna for homeowners.
